Neuro Lyme Disease & Dementia Link: Symptoms, Treatments Explored In New Report

Lyme disease symptoms can mimic some of the symptoms of dementia because of how the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi affects the brain and nervous system, notes a new report by RX Lyme.

-- Dr. Stanley Lang, a family physician and creator of The Natural Lyme Disease Treatment Program, observes that early signs of cognitive decline in otherwise healthy individuals could be attributed to neuroborreliosis, a condition caused by Lyme disease that affects the brain and nervous system. In his new report, Dr. Lang discusses the connection between Lyme disease and dementia, as well as clinical observations, preventive measures, and available treatments.

Neurologic Lyme disease or 'neuro lyme' occurs when the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, spread by the bite of black-legged ticks, infect the peripheral or central nervous system. Patients may experience symptoms such as memory loss, poor focus, impaired problem-solving ability, confusion, and the inability to process spatial relationships.

RX Lyme cautions that not all cognitive decline may be attributable to Lyme disease. Conditions like Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia could also account for cognitive or psychological symptoms. However, when these symptoms manifest in individuals who a tick may have bitten, Lyme disease must be considered.

Dr. Lang cites the case of John, a 65-year-old male who was bitten by a tick and, over the next few months, developed symptoms consistent with early-onset dementia. However, a thorough evaluation yielded a differential diagnosis of Lyme disease, and John's symptoms improved after he was treated for neuroborreliosis.

"John's case is not unique; there are many similar stories that suggest a link between Lyme disease and symptoms similar to dementia," notes Dr. Lang. "This highlights the importance of considering Lyme disease in the differential diagnosis of dementia."

When Borrelia burgdorferi infects the nervous system, the body's defenses trigger inflammation of brain tissue, interfering with memory, mood, focus, attention, and behavior. RX Lyme explains that patients with chronic Lyme disease may experience an increase in these and other cognitive impairments and become distressed, depressed, or agitated.

Expert tips for preventing Lyme disease include wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, using DEET-based insect repellents, checking for tick infestations daily, and washing off after walking through wooded or grassy areas. Dr. Lang advises patients and caregivers to pay attention to any symptoms of cognitive decline and contact a healthcare provider for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

The RX Lyme guide recommends contacting a healthcare professional specializing in Lyme disease, cognitive rehab therapy, brain-stimulating exercises, a nutrient-rich diet, and good sleep hygiene as some of the ways to ameliorate these cognitive issues. Antibiotics are the primary first-line treatment for the disease, and lifestyle changes—a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress-reduction techniques like meditation—can accelerate recovery.

"The link between Lyme disease and dementia is still under investigation, but it's evident that Lyme disease can greatly impact cognitive function," continues Dr. Lang. "By being aware of the risks, identifying early signs, and taking steps to prevent them, you can safeguard yourself and those close to you."
