Phase 3 Wellness Expands Natural Medicine Access In Marginalized GA Communities

In the face of rapidly rising demand for holistic medicine, providers in underserved areas of the country are looking for ways to expand access and boost awareness.

-- The NIH reported recently that over 40% of people are regularly taking complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) in the US. However, with insurance providers often refusing coverage to those interested in CAMs and a general lack of both awareness and accessibility to high quality treatment, growth in this once-promising industry has stalled, leaving local providers to pick up the slack, particularly in marginalized communities.

Phase 3 Wellness, a holistic medicine provider based in Roswell, GA—an area currently in the midst of its own health demand crisis—recently detailed the challenges that naturopaths are facing as they attempt to expand their services. As they explain, the issue is less with accessibility in a traditional sense, and is more a question of quality and oversight.

While the internet and Amazon more specifically has eliminated access barriers for many, this flood of unregulated treatments has given rise to additional problems. One study conducted by Verywell Health found that around half of all CAMs listed on Amazon put forward false or unfounded health claims, while around 1/3rd contained ingredients not listed on the label. Even more concerningly, 13 of the 30 samples analyzed did not contain any of the listed active ingredients whatsoever and, consequently, had no measurable health effects.

The solution, a Phase 3 Wellness team member suggests, lies with local naturopaths, with a few caveats.

As with any healthcare provider, they recommend first researching an individual’s qualifications and training. Patient reviews are also a semi-reliable resource for those interested in vetting potential options, they state.

A reputable provider, they go on to explain, should be able to identify trustworthy brands while also crucially helping patients to avoid negative interactions between CAMs and traditional pharmaceuticals.

Naturopathic practitioner Liana Madera adds to this idea, stating, “There are hundreds of herbal medicines in a naturopathic dispensary. A skilled naturopath utilises both traditional knowledge and scientific research to determine which options will be best for you.”

Beyond the application of CAMs, naturopathy’s hybrid focus on physical and psychological health is filling an essential niche, says Phase 3 Wellness. Mental health care, as reported by Medical News Today, is becoming less accessible year over year, especially among marginalized groups. However, the NIH reports that in many cases, holistic care may offer a more affordable entry point into the mental healthcare space, opening access to those who have been otherwise deprived.

By placing an emphasis on self-directed care, educational access, and, above all else, access to safe CAM options, Phase 3 Wellness and other providers like them hope to patch these accessibility gaps and create an environment where individuals are empowered to make choices about their complementary care.
